Downtown Omaha's Holiday Lights Arrive Before the Streetcar Detours Leave

Omaha's Holiday Lights Festival turns on for its 27th season on Saturday, November 28. That will be the first lighting ceremony to take place while the streetcar project's last major utility closure is still active a few blocks west. The two barely touch. Nearly all of the season's programming sits from 13th Street east, in the Old Market and across The RiverFront. The construction zones run from Harney at 13th Street west to 24th.

For anyone who lives downtown, that split works as a map for the season. In the Old Market and along The RiverFront, the holidays are mostly a walk. West of 13th, the same evening takes a planned route and a little extra time, and the businesses on that side need the visit more.

The Lights End About Where the Work Zones Begin

The festival's lights in the Old Market cover 10th to 13th Streets and Farnam to Jackson Streets, according to the Holiday Lights Festival. The RiverFront is spreading hundreds of illuminated trees across all 72 acres of Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park and Lewis & Clark Landing.

The work zones start close to where the lights end, with Harney's track zone beginning at 13th Street. The Omaha Streetcar downtown construction page listed these conditions in its update for the week of October 19:

  • Farnam Street, 20th Street to 24th Avenue: closed for utility work for about two months.
  • Harney Street, 20th Street to 24th Avenue: closed for about two months, with lane restrictions on Harney from 25th to 19th.
  • 24th Street, Howard to Douglas: closed for about two months. The city calls this the last major closure for utility work on the project.
  • 16th Street, Douglas to Dodge: closed about two months to build the electrical ductbank that will power the streetcar.
  • 16th Street, Douglas to Farnam: set to close in early November, with local detours.
  • Harney, 13th to 18th: track construction continues, with that zone expected to finish in spring 2027.
  • Farnam, 14th to 18th: pole foundations and signal conduit work, expected to finish in summer 2027.

The same update puts downtown utility work at 90% complete. To keep homes and businesses reachable, some one-way streets have been switched to two-way traffic. The project expects that to create unfamiliar traffic patterns, and it asks drivers to follow the posted signs. Pedestrian access to businesses along the corridor will be maintained during business hours.

Timing matters most here. Omaha Public Works told WOWT that at least one lane of the 24th Street closure at Harney and Farnam would be open by Thanksgiving, and that all utility work would wrap up after the New Year. The lights go on two days after Thanksgiving. For the entire festival, the west side will be partly reopened but not yet finished.

The East Side Calendar, Date by Date

A few details are worth having before you go. The festival's events page says Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. will lead the countdown on November 28. The Gene Leahy Mall show projects video onto the Performance Pavilion and the Burlington Building and plays themed video on the 10th Street Bridge LED wall. For the KETV Family Festival on December 6, the festival runs free trolley and charter-bus transfers between its downtown venues. The Nutcracker plays December 4 at 7:30 p.m., December 5 at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and December 6 at 2 p.m., according to Ticket Omaha.

Christmas at Union Station is built around a 40-foot tree. It adds Family Nights with Santa on Tuesdays, December 1, 8, 15 and 22, and a Holiday Concert Series on Tuesday evenings and Saturday daytimes from November 28 to December 22. Durham admission is $17 for adults, $14 for seniors 62 and older, $10 for children 3 to 12, and free for children 2 and under and for members.

The Nights That Don't Need a Car

Because the events cluster so tightly, a downtown resident can do much of this season on foot. Most of it falls between Jones Street and Farnam, and between 8th and 13th.

The December 12 Holiday Lights Walk shows how compact it is. The Nebraska Trailblazers start at KANEKO at 12th and Jones and walk to the light display around downtown and Heartland of America Park, all in two hours. The Skate Ribbon at Heartland of America Park, at 8th and Farnam, is just as close. Skating is free if you bring your own skates, and rentals are $5 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Skating on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays requires a reservation, every skater needs a submitted waiver, and check-in is at the kiosk. The RiverFront posts the season's schedule on its site.

The Old Market keeps its lights, LED snowflakes, greenery and bows up from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. Its holiday page also promises window displays, carolers and street performers. Three places that weren't open last holiday season sit inside that walkable grid:

  • Monty's Bar & Bottle Shop, 1037 Jones Street, in the Old Market Lofts. It opened May 1, 2026, according to Grow Omaha.
  • Anthem, 1205 Howard Street, in the former Plank space at 12th and Howard. Grow Omaha reported it opened in April 2026.
  • Haven Express Lounge, 1217 Leavenworth Street. It opened in September after seven years as a food truck, and it is locally owned by DeVaute Nunn. It serves food and cocktails and has entertainment. Hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 3 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, per Grow Omaha.

Haven's hours matter on a Saturday festival night. The lounge stays open until 11, which covers several hourly Gene Leahy Mall shows.

West of 14th, Plan the Route Before You Go

The west side of downtown still has reasons to go this season. They just take more planning. Joslyn Art Museum, at 2200 Dodge Street, is a few blocks north of the Farnam and Harney closures. General admission is free. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the museum stays open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Café Society: Art and Sociability in Paris, 1855–1914 runs through January 17, and Sadie Barnette runs through January 3.

The businesses inside the closures are where planning helps most. WOWT reported that Zen Coffee Company's flagship near 24th Avenue and Farnam saw third-quarter revenue drop 40% as crews worked along Farnam. The shop is still open and can be reached from South 25th Street and Douglas. Public Works told the station that drivers should use GPS apps and allow extra time through the corridor. Corridor businesses also have a donor-funded resource. The Nebraska Enterprise Fund created the Streetcar Impact Fund, announced August 7, which offers eligible businesses along the route grants and low-interest loans, and some of the loans can be partly or fully forgiven. The City of Omaha and the streetcar team are sharing information about it and connecting businesses to the fund.

Farnam's street parking will also look different from last December. Along the track segment, it has been converted to its permanent parallel layout.

Where the Garages Fit In

For residents who drive in from the west side or pick up guests, downtown parking is easiest to plan by garage. Park Omaha's garage listing shows $1-per-hour rates with a $10 daily maximum at 19th and Capitol, Park 5, and at 17th and Chicago, Park 6. The garage at 13th and Capitol, Park 8, is listed at $5 per session for event parking only. Park Omaha's event parking page says event pricing can change without notice.

Both $1-per-hour garages sit north of Dodge, near the 16th Street ductbank work. From there it's about a dozen blocks to the Gene Leahy Mall pavilion, and the walk heads into the lit part of downtown.

New Year's Eve Happens Twice

December 31 has two scheduled celebrations, and they are seven hours apart. The Durham's Noon Year's Eve runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with live music, crafts and a balloon drop at noon. The festival's New Year's Eve Fireworks Spectacular launches at 7 p.m. near Heartland of America Park. The show is synchronized to a STAR 104.5 broadcast, and the best views are from The RiverFront and the Old Market. There is no assigned viewing or parking area, and the festival says Park Omaha meters will be free after 5 p.m.

The lights stay on through January 1. Christmas at Union Station runs until January 10. Public Works expects the last streetcar utility work to finish after the New Year, while track construction on Harney between 13th and 18th continues into spring 2027.

Holiday light on old brick does much of a downtown home's selling for it, and this year it comes with a fixed end date. If you're thinking about listing a downtown condo or loft this winter, The Agency Real Estate Group can stage and photograph it while the Old Market is lit and before the season's displays come down.
